It seems you have already installed binary driver from nvidia site. Something wrong with it, even in the case you "clean" this driver with sh ./NVIDIA-...... --uninstall. Try to discover which files exactly it left. I have similar issue with kernel 2.6.26.5 at my job, but everything is OK with newer kernels (not because they are newer - because I didn't install binary from nvidia site for them, only for 2.6.26.5)
