This same feature is required for devices with Ubuntu installed using the lpia architecture. There is no reason why i386 binaries won't work on these machines, but gdebi will not allow installation of these packages. There is a real need to provide an "allowed architecture" list or something. The user is forced to use a command line interface to force install these packages, which is an unacceptable work-around for less technical users.
