The work around does fix the problem. With the work around in place, using the DVI>VGA adapter and VGA cable to the monitor, the display does work but the correct resolution for my monitor (1280x1024) is not chosen. In the Ubuntu resolution utility, both pipelines are being found but the monitors are not being identified correctly. I see 1280x768 being selected for display 1 and 2 (see attached). I don't have a widescreen so I can't test for this.
