If I tried to resize from the top, the bottom of the panel simply slid out of sight. Resizing from the side simply means the right side of the panel begins to disappear. I'm glad your panel works. Mine doesn't, despite uninstalling and reinstalling Thunderbird. I can live with the "thin red line" if I must, but I still would like to see those buttons! --
