Version 0.15.0+git20080820-1ubuntu4 of xserver-xorg-input-synaptics
prevents GDM to startup, I see the X cursor and black background
flashing few times then freezing. Reverting to
0.15.0+git20080820-1ubuntu1 solves the problem and GDM works again.
