The majority of the issues causing said symptom have been fixed in alsa- kernel hg. Patches were available in early October and have been backported to both Dapper and Edgy linux-source (see the October '06 Ubuntu kernel-team list archives) but have yet to be merged (note that some said patches are invasive and questionable for an LTS release).
