** Description changed:

I tried to install ubuntu 8.04 LTS but the first GUI scrolls so fast(or
at least thats what I think it doing) horizontally that I can't see any
thing but the color of the windows. I installed it then using the text
mode. The installation worked. The boot and splash screen displayed
fine, but the login or desktop manager does the same thing the
installation and liveCD did. It seems to only happen when the X server
  is running.

When I right click I can see the popup is opened but it is displayed at
multiple places at once. I can't even read its text.
  My PC:

  CPU: AMD Sempron 2600+
  Graphics card: Radeon 9200SE
  Monitor: ProLine 17'' LCD
+
+
+ I have been able to get my Ubuntu into a usable state by modifying the
xorg.conf file. I used the vesa drivers with some of the setting that Knoppix
had when I used it with my pc. This got me to a GUI that asked me if a wanted
to change the settings because I was in a low resolution mode or some thing
like that. After trying various setting I got my display in 1280x1024 mode
still with the vesa drivers because the others did not work. So now I have no
hardware acceleration.
+
+ I have tried running the live session on the install DVD on another pc.
+ This gave me a similar problem as I had on my pc. This one I fixed by
+ only modifying the xorg.conf file to use the vesa drivers.

** Summary changed:

+ display scolls horisontally very fast, loops around.
