Good point :) If you could try a recent Intrepid live CD, it has a boot
option "text" that will prevent gdm and Xorg from starting. You can then
install openssh-server (I hope you don't need X for configuring the
network) and then start X manually.
For the Hardy live CD you can boot with "break=bottom" and then delete
/root/etc/rc2.d/S30gdm in the initrd busybox shell ("exit" will leave it
and let it continue booting).
