Using intrepid and the 0.9.11 packages from
https://launchpad.net/~themuso/+archive my Alsa Master volume is still
reset everytime I start pulseaudio (it gets set to 93). I can easily
reproduce by lowering the volume, killing pulseaudio and then starting
it again. This causes the volume to be set to 93 again.

dmesg:
00:11.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237
AC97 Audio Controller (rev 50)

uname -a:
Linux desktop 2.6.27-2-generic #1 SMP Thu Aug 28 17:20:02 UTC 2008 i686
GNU/Linux

I also found an interresting entry when starting pulseaudio with
--log-level=debug:

I: alsa-util.c: Successfully attached to mixer 'hw:0'
I: alsa-util.c: Using mixer control "Master".
...
I: module-alsa-sink.c: Volume ranges from 0 to 31.
I: module-alsa-sink.c: Volume ranges from -43,50 dB to 3,00 dB.
I: module-alsa-sink.c: Device cannot attenuate for more than -60 dB (only
-43,50 dB supported), falling back to software volume control.
I: module-alsa-sink.c: Using software volume control. Trying to reset sound
card to 0 dB.
