Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rosegarden

re: Version 1:1.6.1-1ubuntu1 ... why does this package have such a
screwy version number?

it is a problem: I want to replace this very antiquated rosegarden with
a more modern version 1.7.3, so I followed the package maintainer's
guide and created the dir rosegarden-1.7.3 and built a package and
installed it and it worked beautifully, but now Update Manager keeps
pestering me to "upgrade" to version 1:1.6.1 :(

so I tried to build 1:1.7.3 ... but

$ dh_make --createorig
The directory name must be <package>-<version> for dh_make to work!
I cannot understand the directory name or you have an invalid directory name!

the 'official' package violates this naming rule, and the package
building tools enforce that rule, and, I guess technically, this
violates the GPL clause that says free software must contain the build
instructions to recreate the package from source :)

Can the version number be changed to remove that one-colon so the
version numbers will sort correctly in Update Manager and once again
1.6.1 will be LESS than 1.7.3?

Please?
