I'm having a keyboard problem on a dell latitude C800 laptop. I get dead
keys. they seem to "go dead" when the laptop lid is shut while the
system is up and running as best I can tell. I had assumed that the
notebook keyboard needed to be replaced because sometimes they dead keys
come back to life for short periods of time. So I replaced the keyboard.
This did not restore the dead keys tho. there is a pattern of the dead
keys tho......example: at the moment the dead keys are: the "3" key
above the "E" key, the "E", "D", and the "C" key are all dead( these
keys form a diagonal line starting with the "3" key ending with the "C"
key). however plugging in a USB keyboard gets me around the dead key
problem. I had this problem in 7.10, did a fresh install and the problem
went away for a while. Then I did a fresh install of 8.04 and had no
dead keys for several weeks, then suddenly they showed up( while g/f)
was using notebook. the hassle became too much since she was using it
most of the time. so we replaced the notebook for her use. I started
using it full time with another fresh install of 8.04.1, and for over a
month is worked very well, I thought the problem was solved. Then I
closed the lid assuming hibernation would invoke, but ever since I have
the above mentioned dead keys again. There is one thing I am certain of,
re-booting never once produced the dead keys issue. shutting down the
notebook never produced the dead key problem, I am certain that the
problem showed up only after the suspend to hibernation was invoked but
also I had to change the wifi configuration because I was trying to
login to a different network. my user name and password contain the dead
keys so this is a major problem. I have set the keyboard to the correct
keyboard using the keyboard list in the preferences drop-down, noting
works. There is one thing I am certain of before everything else, if I
format again, the problem WILL be gone ( proving its not the keyboard)
but the problem WILL come back later. any help ?

PS: the dead keys are NOT always the same dead keys listed above, the
shift position on the keyboard, but they always seem to produce a
diagional line of dead keys beginning with a numeric key, and ending at
the space bar.
