I think I'm experiencing the same problem. I'm just adding my info
here. My new webcam is a Logitech QuickCam Pro for Notebooks, which is
supposed to be supported by linux with OS drivers.

Works in Ekiga, but on camorama I get:
"Could not connect to video device (/dev/video0).
Please check connection."

I'm testing on hardy and intrepid

** Summary changed:

- [feisty] camorama fails to detect web-camera
+ [Intrepid][Hardy][feisty] camorama fails to detect web-camera

** Tags added: hardy intrepid

** Description changed:

in edgy, my usb webcam worked
  in feisty - not yet..
  error:
"could no connect to video device (/dev/video0).
  please check connection"

the camera is detected using control-center->hardware information
  /sys/class/usb_device/usbdev3.5
  /dev/bus/usb/003/005
+
+ EDIT: the cams work in Ekiga, but not camorama
