I should have been more accurate, instead of saying : "having official Ubuntu packages for Chef might help this" I should have said, "having official Ubuntu packages for the current release of Chef might help this" The client is supported across Ubuntu releases, but Chef server seems only supported[1], at the time of writing, on Ubuntu Lucid, Debian sid and squeeze. Anyway, Chef is developing rapidly, currently at version 0.9.8, and it may be too soon to expect Ubuntu-cloud to track the current release, currently the Ubuntu ppa above has Chef 0.7.x for lucid and Chef 0.8.x for maverick.
