TKLBAM author here. TKLBAM allows you to "convert" your system from VMDK to EC2 or vice versa pretty easily (e.g., backup on VMDK, restore on EC2).
The catch: it currently only works for TurnKey Linux based systems, which are customized versions of Ubuntu optimized for specific usage scenarios.
