The Ekiga devs who I spoke to said that a.) it's not ready for SIP and b.) even when it is there are a lot of things that it will not support because they are going for a unified interface.
I asked of course if the two projects shared code, but apparently they use two separate codebases, something about two different ways of doing things. I got the impression that SIP is way out of the realistic reach of Empathy (at least for now). Just see how many IM clients are around and how many VoIP apps there are.
