A perpetual goal of the Desktop Team is to try to reduce our patch delta with upstream. GDM is one of the most heavily patched components in Ubuntu that now is no longer being shipped by default on the main CD. I'd like to see us at least reduce our delta with Debian to make our maintenance easier.
Is Debian's renaming to gdm3 permanent? Using the same package names makes looking at a diff quite a bit simpler, so I'd like to see us follow Debian's naming practice.
