Sounds like a case to add to the new GNOME Online Accounts panel. If you have a Google account, you enter your address, and then choose whether you want to enable mail, docs, etc., or cloud print. You'd just need to add another GtkSwitch. No need to add a new applet that would clutter the control center for most users that don't use that feature.
