This problem has been outstanding for some time now:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/shotwell/+bug/1314904

As I understand the situation, some (all?) of the GNOME flavors of Ubuntu don't mark the UOA packages as a necessary or suggested dependency for Shotwell. When users go to publish photos on UOA-supported services, Shotwell simply fails to work with no warning dialog, just some ugly console warnings. Apparently this change was made to avoid installing a large chunk of the Unity subsystem on a machine just for Shotwell (although I would think this affects other UOA apps too).

If I have any of the above wrong, please let me know.

This is a rather nasty problem for our users. There's no indication in the software what they need to do to make this work.

If the Unity dependency is off the table, my suggestion is for non-Unity spins to distribute Shotwell with the original (non-UOA) plugins.

Can this be prioritized and fixed for our users?
