Hi. I'd like to make a suggestion regarding Ubuntu's current state of Blu-ray burning support.
First of all, let me say I'm aware that in 2008 Ubuntu decided to use cdrkit over cdrecord. I don't want to change that. *What I'd like to suggest is that at the very least we add cdrecord to either universe or multiverse.* The reason is I feel we are failing to our users regarding Blu-ray burning support. There are lots of bugs in the Ubuntu tools and their default configurations (crdkit, k3b and brasero) that simply mean Ubuntu does not support Blu-ray burning by default. Launchpad bugs regarding that matter are getting nowhere. *Bug* *Status* *Heat* 484479 Confirmed 10 600770 Confirmed 20 600871 New 6 600898 New 6 637358 Confirmed 14 637379 Confirmed 26 664074 Confirmed 14 678294 New 6 788322 Confirmed 34 1084318 Confirmed 6 1113679 Fix Released 22 1424215 Confirmed 6 Users are just left there wasting time and optical media with the default burning tools until they go online to find this workaround https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CdDvd/Burning#Blu-Ray_Burning which relies on Brandon Snaider's PPA. Launchpad statistics show the latest cdrecord version in that ppa has 1,393 downloads just for trusty. *Ubuntu version* *cdrecord version* *i386* *amd64* *Total* utopic 10:3.01a24-0ubuntu1~utopic~cdrtoolsppa2 21 160 181 trusty 10:3.01a24-0ubuntu1~trusty~cdrtoolsppa2 264 1129 1393 precise 10:3.01a24-0ubuntu1~precise~cdrtoolsppa2 196 490 686 saucy 10:3.01a22-0ubuntu1~saucy~cdrtoolsppa4 110 420 530 raring 10:3.01a22-0ubuntu1~raring~cdrtoolsppa4 57 150 207 quantal 10:3.01a22-0ubuntu1~quantal~cdrtoolsppa4 26 48 74 oneiric 10:3.00-0ubuntu1~oneiric~cdrtoolsppa1 228 304 532 natty 10:3.00-0ubuntu1~natty~cdrtoolsppa1 220 220 440 maverick 10:3.00-0ubuntu1~maverick~cdrtoolsppa1 183 129 312 So people are fixing the problem on their own. The way we currently deal with users trying to burn Blu-ray is really bad. We should either close all those bugs as wontfix or close them as fixed and point them to the workaround. We are acting as if we could realistically expect cdrkit to fix any of those bugs. The latest cdrkit release was in 2010 and dvd+rw-tools 7.1 is from 2008. *I think we should have cdrecord in the repos in case that PPA is no longer available or updated, but also as the only realistic way we can claim Blu-ray burning support.* What do you think?
