Cost isn't only about money. It's also about the time people have to invest to pick the right choice. It's about incompatibilities because different people pick different choices. At worst, people go away because they're over-confused. If you want to see people having fun in reducing complexity, watch out for projects like Puppy Linux, Damn Small Linux, TinyBSD, lighttpd, AbiWord, and many more. Yes, my (FreeBSD) web server has a 14 MebiByte disk footprint only and I had much fun getting rid of all the other stuff.
