Hi! I hope this is the right channel.
Apparently, Daniel T. Chen lobbied for turning off OSS and OSS emulation in Maverick: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/579300 >From the bug report, it sounds like it was an experiment. In any case, it turns out that there are some old programs that depend on the OSS emulation. If you look through that bug report (and associates), there are quite a few. I personally got a problem with tvtime, the only working TV viewer for GNOME. Unfortunately, these reported regressions didn't mean that OSS emulation was turned back on. So Maverick is still broken. :( While it seems there might at some point be fixes for these problems, the only reliable solution right now is to compile a kernel yourself. I don't think that's the right answer to Ubuntu users. So could somebody please step in and either do a serious effort of fixing these problems now or issue a quick fix by reenabling OSS emulation, at least as a module? I have tried to contact Leann Ogasawara who did the actual kernel change twice about this, but gotten no response.
