We're considering upgrading to GRUB 2.00 for Ubuntu 12.10. This change will be slightly later than ideal, so I'd like to get as much testing as possible done first. I've uploaded test packages to a PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~cjwatson/+archive/grub DM-RAID is currently known to be problematic, so I advise not installing this on such systems as yet; and despite the fact that there are packages built for precise in that PPA, I do not suggest installing those at this time (and we have no plans to upgrade 12.04 to GRUB 2.00). So far this has been tested in BIOS and UEFI setups, and the corresponding Debian experimental packages have been tested on LVM, LVM+crypto, and RAID-1. Pre-release boot loader packages are not for the faint of heart. While they're unlikely to cause permanent problems, it can take some work to recover from failures. I suggest that you keep some other means of booting (e.g. an Ubuntu desktop image) around. If you need to reinstall an older version, I recommend this method in preference to the others on the same page: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2/Installing#ChRoot If you can help out with testing, please mail me privately with a report of the testing you've done, quoting the set of GRUB packages you have installed and their versions ('dpkg-query -W grub\* | grep ubuntu'). It would be helpful if you could restrict your comments to differences between the packages currently in quantal and these ones, so that I have less data to wade through.
