Conceptually u-d-common is a level above ndiswrapper as far as the actual drivers are concerned. It (and software-properties-gtk) could take over the functionality of the UI bits in theory, but there is no support for it right now; we usually rely on packages to declare what devices they can drive with a "Modaliases:" package header, but of course that doesn't work with DLL wrapped Windows drivers which are not packaged. But anyway, as this has been (unintentionally) broken since Precise and we didn't hear any complaints, I'm +1 with dropping those. I wonder when that stuff was actually tested the last time, and it's far from obvious for a user how to use it on a live system.
