I expect GNOME (meaning GNOME Shell on top of GDM) to switch to Wayland by default in the next year or so. Once that's working well I would not be surprised if they would remove support for running that stack with X as system compositor. You would need to ask the GNOME developers if you wanted more details or confirmation of my assumptions.
