Bug description:
A chronic problem affects 8.04.1 RC1 where "apt-get update" and the 
update-notifier fail to query the network for package updates, immediately 
after the installation is complete.

Here's a sample of the error returned.

W: Failed to fetch http://www.array.org/ubuntu/dists/hardy/Release  Unable to 
find expected entry  eeepc/binary-i386/Packages in Meta-index file (malformed 
Release file?)
[...]
W: Failed to fetch 
http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/hardy/main/binary-i386/Packages.bz2  
Hash Sum mismatch
[...]
E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones 
used instead.
