Does this happen every single time, or just occasionally?
If it's occasionally, maybe you're victim of the tap-click: you
accidentally brush/tap the touchpad and the system interprets it as a
click.
Another thought: there's a setting: Preferences -> Windows -> "Select
windows when the mouse moves over them." That should be disabled, but
maybe it got turned on somehow on your system.
