pru1977 proposed the following answer:
I'm using a LinkSys WIFI router and had a similar problem. First after
installation of 8.04.1 no WIFI connection was possible. I installed all
updates and additionally wicd network manager. Since then it is possible
to connect unencrypted and with WPA encryption. Using WEP is still not
possible.
