NoInfo proposed the following answer:
You need to use sudo. To set a root password type sudo passwd root
Enter in your user's password then what you want the root password to be twice.
You can use sudo for any command and it will execute as if you were root.
Using sudo you could mount your device from the command line under your normal
account.
