stenvoon gave more information on the question: apologies, that 2nd paragraph was poorly worded. I googled what HAL does for me. It essentially allows gnome and other apps easier access to hardware (specifically hotplug stuff like USB sticks and SD cards). What I really need to know is how to stop the HAL daemon messing up my video playback.
