David, thank you so much for replying. I didn't realise that there was a
hidden options tab. Setting the "Input source" to "Front Mic" fixed it.
For others:
1. from the command line type gnome-volume-control
2. From Edit menu of gnome-volume-control choose "preferences". Check the
"Input source" box
3. A new tab "Options" will appear. In this tab you can choose "Front Mic" as
the input
