I tried out an external DVD player in Ubuntu-eee 8.04.1, and found that no player was able to play a DVD. I believe the conflict is the commented out line in /etc/fstab for /media/cdrom0 to fix the SD mounting. I tried totem and VLC, and both programs just crash when trying to load the DVD. Any action but watching DVDs on the drive works fine so far... It's only when the player tries to play a disc.
