Why don't you use Alt+Ctrl+Shift+R?
Unless you want to test recordmydesktop if it works with Ubuntu Gnome.

Whenever I click on 'Record', there should be a 'Stop' option showing
on the panel but with Ubuntu GNOME, I see nothing and there is no way
