Hello ubuntu-hams! I am happy to announce that Ubuntu's version of the 'hamlib' rig control library [1] has been updated to the latest version (hamlib 1.2.10) in the upcoming Ubuntu "Lucid" release. Hamlib is used by most applications that support rig control [2]. Our thanks to the upstream hamlib developers for all their work and this fine software.
The ubuntu-hams-devel team is also considering the idea of pushing this new hamlib version into Karmic (upgrading the hamlib installed in all current Ubuntu 9.10 "Karmic" systems) but we need your help to test it first. See *** Karmic PPA *** below if you'd like to try the new hamlib, and thanks in advance for your feedback. 73 de KA6MAL Kamal Mostafa (http://launchpad.net/~kamalmostafa) ubuntu-hams-devel team [1] http://www.hamlib.org/ [2] http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/hamlib/index.php?title=Applications *** Hamlib 1.2.10 features *** Hamlib version 1.2.10 includes the following improvements from the hamlib 1.2.9 version currently released in Ubuntu Karmic: * New models: IC-7200, PCR-1500, PCR-2500, RX-340, R&S ESMC, BC898T, Si570 AVR-USB, Paragon (skeleton) * New rotator backend: SPID, GS-232 (not A or B) Fixes and features: * TH-F7E, K2, FT-920, Yaesu NewCAT, IC-7000, IC-7800, IC-910, IC-718, IC-756PROIII, Tentec Orion, Jupiter, RX320, AOR-8000, PCR-1000, Video4Linux, all the kenwood backends, GS-232A * ABI version in backend symbols expose PTT/DCD setup through * rig_set_conf() Parallel port PTT now following cwdaemon * (STROBE+INIT) interface bindings ltdl update *** Karmic PPA *** I have produced an update package for Karmic which provides the new hamlib version 1.2.10 for Ubuntu Karmic. To install it on your system, follow the instructions at https://help.launchpad.net/Packaging/PPA/InstallingSoftware . This PPA's location is "ppa:ubuntu-hams/ppa", so the commands you'll run in a terminal will be: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-hams/ppa sudo apt-get update Once you've done that (and assuming you have some hamlib-based applications installed), you will see the little orange "Update Manager" icon appear, indicating that some software updates are available. Click that icon and then "Install Updates" as usual to pick up the PPA and the new version of hamlib. And that's it -- applications which use hamlib will use the new version automatically. You can revert to the original Karmic version of hamlib any time you wish by using the Software Sources application (System > Administration > Software Sources > Other Software). The new PPA hamlib version will also be automatically upgraded if an "official" version does get released for Karmic. Please report any problems you encounter with this PPA version of hamlib to this group, or to me <[email protected]> directly. Also let me know if works fine for you, as that feedback would be useful as well. Thanks!
