I haven't tried Edubuntu yet. But one of the reason behind crashing
installer can be bad memory chips.

I think (X)/(K)/(Ed)Ubuntu comes with a program named memtest. This
program can be run from the CD itself (at the boot time). It should
tell you the health of the RAM chips in your machine.
