Hi list, First post, therefore an introduction. I've been using linux of and on for the past 4 years, and the ubunto desktop installation has been one of the easiest I've tried, having done installs with RH 4 thru FC4. I'm looking forward to contribute.
However there is a problem. I've been trying to make my dataone broadband connection work on ubuntu. The modem/router I have is a huawei mt882, connecting via ethernet (not via usb) When I give the first command, as mentioned under "Ethernet Connection" on http://www.ubuntu-in.org/wiki/Broadband_Howto#BSNL_DataOne , I get the error <snip, but not verbatim> $ sudo ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.2 SIOCSIFADDR: No such device eth0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device. </snip> The page mentioned above doesn't mention how to handle this error. The modem/router and ethernet card work fine on other installs present in the same machine. The ethernet card is an iNTEX "Wake On" Lan, 10/100 Mbps Ethernet Card Plug & Play. Does one need to additionally install some kernel modules after the default 6.06 install and if so, how do I find which one to install? The PC I am using is assembled, intel P4. I would also like to add more information to the http://www.ubuntu-in.org/wiki/Broadband_Howto#BSNL_DataOne page based on the resolution, but first, I have to find the resoution :) hence this email. I don't mind spending some time in finding out more about ifconfig but that's not my primary intent of using ubuntu so would appreciate help. Many thanks, hope to contribute more to the ubuntu community after get this working.
