Welcome to the community, As for the automounting, its working perfectly on Ubuntu. Check your USB stick with ubuntu, just using the Live CD.
I am not sure if there is support problem with the transcend USB sticks, but most of the sticks my friends brought to me was mounted effortlessly. You can contribute to Ubuntu by various means. Anyone from Expert to beginners, programmers to users can contribute. Check Out: http://www.ubuntu.com/community/participate http://www.ubuntu.com/community/participate/developerzone Use the every corner of Ubuntu and file bugs, if you can, try debugging those, else there are people waiting to debug them. Just give the bugs. Tell your review of Ubuntu, and how can it be made better and usable. Spread the words about the Freedom and please prepare your strong points why we should encourage Free And Opensource movements, why the closed proprietary software are big chokes in human development, and then make your surroundings aware of the fact. There is no hide and seek in Open Source software :) you got some points to start, discuss with so many friends in irc, #ubuntu-in #ubuntu and lots many, about different issues and ideas.
