Dear Ravi,

As I understand:
1. You are using a broadband DSL connection with an ADSL router 
2. In Win XP, you are unable to connect to internet 
3. In Ubuntu, you have to issue the commands listed by you in order to connect 
to the net

The above suggests that you have not switched on DHCP your ADSL router. DHCP 
i.e. Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol is a protocol for assigning dynamic LP 
addresses to devices on a network. Please read your broadband router's manual 
to see how this can be setup. Usually this is very easy to do. Alternately, you 
can also request your broadband service provider to set this up for you.

After you switch on DHCP, you will not need to enter the commands in Ubuntu. It 
may also solve your problem of connecting to the web on WinXP side.

hi all,

i have a strange problem. i had put it up earlier in this forum but without 
much luck. am trying my luck again!

have a Win XP & ubuntu 7.04 dual booter. i used to use win xp
earlier to connect to the internet using ADSL (HUAWEI). however after
installing ubuntu, i couldnt connect to the net. then i queried this
forum & got an useful link with the following advise


sudo if config eth0 up 192.168.1.2

sudo route add default gw 192.168.1.1

sudo vi /etc/resolv.conf


after that, i could connect to the internet using ubuntu, but since theniam now 
unable to connect to the net using Win XP!!

another problem - eveytime i boot with ubuntu, i need to enter the above 
mentioned commands to be able to connect to the net.
