Yes, it might be useful to have a progress bar. The problem is that the filesystem caching is handled at the kernel level, and my guess is that there is no easy way for the window manager to be aware of what transfers are pending. However, the notification popup of files being transferred serves a similar purpose. Wait for the notification popup to go away, look at the flashing light on the USB indicating drive activity, or use the suggested method of doing a manual sync, and waiting for it to finish before physically removing the USB drive.
