I believe that C2D's are slightly more power efficient. Besides I don't think you should find much difference for the type of work that you've mentioned. Reading up on http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2808&p=1 there doesn't seem much to differenciate between the two on what I saw. Are both the models you compared on price having the same hardware except for the processor? Could be that the price difference is there because of something else other than the processor.
