What according to you makes IRC the ideal platform ? As opposed to say..
calling for ideas on the mailing list itself ?

Advantages: 
        - People can participate at times comfortable to them.
        - They can say what they want and move on .. unlike on IRC where
          they'll have to wait for a chance to speak.
