Friends, Hope this is not too late to chip in.
I have an Inspiron 1420 that i bought in Dec 2007. Have been running ubuntu on the same. Had a few issues with sound and video in gutsy but hardy is fine ...no issues at all. Not crashed even once and am using it full time. Have vista on a partition but haven't been there for a long time now. I've installed ubuntu on XPS as well for a few friends and it has worked well. Dell India is not selling any laptops with ubuntu pre loaded. Don't even ask the guys, they don't have any clue about what ubuntu is. I tried hard for them to sell me one without vista so that I don't have to pay for the vista. But they refused, however i got a 5000 discount after some hard bargaining. At that time Dell was selling laptops online only but now they are in the shops. And introductory offers are usually with a discount, so go for it. If you buy online, they will come from Sriperumbudur(near chennai) and not Malaysia, like mine did. If you are getting one from the US be sure to buy a global warranty so that in case of needing service you can have it done locally and not send it back to the US. I can have mine serviced in the Asia_pacific region and not elsewhere, but that suit me well and I'm happy. orthodoc. -- ubuntu-in mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-in
