Now I understood what you are looking for. If you like interactive programs more then you can use aptitude to install packages from terminal. Just do 'sudo aptitude'. In case you just want a simple command use command 'sudo apt-get install linux-image-generic'. linux-image-generic is a meta packages which always depends on latest kernel for the ubuntu version you are using and other related packages like restricted modules.
