why would getmail be any different from any other mail client, considering the
problem is with gmail and not the mail client.

There is nothing wrong with anything. However the only limitation that gmail
has is that it doesn't allow the download of more than 100 emails at a time. So
you have to keep redoing it till all your mail arrives.
The first time I set up getmail , I automated it to run every 5 mins till all
my mail got downloaded. You can also save your email in different archive
formats with getmail.
