What version of Ubuntu are you using:

For fonts

open a Terminal and run nautilus (the file browser) in super user mode

like -$sudo nautilus
it will ask for your user password - after which it will open up a file
browser
in which press Control+l which should show you an address bar

there navigate to /usr/share/fonts

open another natutilus browser window (go to places and home) find your
fonts and copy them to the above (/usr/share/fonts/ directory

close your super user terminal and run the following commands

sudo fc-cache -fsv

your fonts will be properly installed and ready to run

***
For installing programmes

Method 1
Got to Applications --> Add/ Remove and select what software you want to
install

Method 2
go to System --> Administration - Synaptic package manager

this will ask you for your password - after which it will open up a window
with a list of software that can be installed - in the search bar run a
search for whatever software you and and select for install - it should do
the job automagically.

For software that is not available you may need to do it differently - for
which the instructions are usually available on the website you get it from.
But in most cases you will find all the software available in ubuntu

 both Methods require internet access

if you don't have internet access say so , so that other methods can be
suggested.
