I think that there was a change somewhere, which we haven't noticed. Need to scan through the changelogs of Ubuntu. By the way, unless you have a multi user setup, this should do for you. But, in case you do have a multiuser setup, you could either copy paste the .fonts folder, or symlink all of them to point to a common fonts folder.
