Looks like partition table of the hard disk was changed after
installation of Ubuntu. Because of this the root partition referred in
grub kernel lines does not exist anymore.
If you know which partition (/dev/sd*) is root partition then ask your
feidn to change option root=xxx by editing boot entry line on the fly
(pressing 'e' on appropriate line in grub menu).
