What desktop do you use? GNOME? Would you mind trying something lighter? I use fluxbox on my P4 2.0GHz 512MB RAM machine. I can run 2-3 apps at a time. Problem happens more while switching between apps since my NVidia graphics card stopped working and onboard graphics is pathetic.
