I think you have mounted the ext4 partition with the correct options set. My fstab entires are very similar to what you have setup: /dev/sda1 /mnt/sda1 ext4 defaults 0 2
i think you should set the permissions for the files and folders within the mounted partition for normal users to be able write into it.
