As others mentioned Testdisk/Photorec are great. Problem with Photorec is that it will rename the recovered files. Also, there will be huge number of files, try to filter the recovery files by file type, which can save time digging into. I recovered 65000 files from 4GB ubuntu hdd image, so you can imagine the number of files from normal HDD. Testdisk -- Scan and repair partitions Photorec -- recover lost files from partitions
