depends on what sort of disaster , just loss of files or corrupt hard disks etc or something worse like a hammer that fell on a hard disk by mistake :-) have been using testdisk - its really good for on the fly recovery of lost / accidentally deleted files, esp from data cards and camera memory cards. and is also good for recovering information /data from lost partitions. (esp if some virus / malware snuck in you know where and you are "wincing" with the pain and wanting to throw something out of the fanlight) It can work on your resident Linux OS , specially (only rather) if you have more than one partition and the recovery to partition is greater than the recovery from partition.
